COMO HACE DIEZ AÑOS INGLATERRA SUEÑA CON SER CAMPEÓN CON GRAND SLAM INCLUÍDO

La escuadra guiada por el entrenador Stuart Lancaster tras dos victorias resonantes sobre Escocia e Irlanda, se catapultó a la cumbre del Seis Naciones 2013, y cuenta con un programa favorable de dos partidos próximos que los debe disputar en su feudo de Twickenham. Por lo que tiene dos semanas de reflexión donde debe hacer las cuentas con los sueños e ilusiones de proclamarse campeón con Grand Slam como en 2003.

Y sus rivales?, tanto Irlanda como Gales, Escocia e Italia se empantanaron en campos escarchados y Francia se hundió en el mismo encajando dos derrotas inimaginables para los actuales sub campeones del mundo y que venían de una buena performance en noviembre donde dieron cuenta de Australia, Argentina y Samoa.

Irlanda cayó ante Inglaterra perdiendo a dos piezas importantes como el apertura Jonathan Sexton y el wing Simon Zebo, con lesiones musculares. En dos semanas la escuadra del veterano apertura Brian O´Driscoll, debe visitar a Escocia en Murrayfield, un escollo en Edimburgo muy difícil de superar.

Mientras que Gales el campeón saliente, que resucitó en Paris ganando a “Les Bleus” en el “Stade de France”,  enfrentará en el Olímpico de Roma a Italia que viene de una traumática derrota frente a Escocia. A la vez que Inglaterra toca el vielo con las manos por su victoria estratégica lograda en Dublín ante Irlanda con el apertura Owen Farrel como máximo goleador y decisivo con sus 4 penales por 2 del veterano apertura Ronan O´ Gara.

Como hace una década cuando fue campeón con Grand Slam y luego proclamarse campeón mundial en Australia 2003, Inglaterra vive una euforia similar. Hoy el XV de la Rosa de los Tudor sueña con la Triple Corona y el Grand Slam gracias a la espectacular actuación de Owen Farrell que se encuentra en la cresta de la ola a sus 21 años, y ya es promocionado como el "nuevo Jonny Wilkinson".

Tras las perfomances que lo tuvieron como protagonista en tres victorias consecutivas: ante Nueva Zelanda y Escocia en Twickenham e Irlanda en el “Aviva” de Dublín, Inglaterra como su apertura y goleador Owen Farrell, hacen revivir imágenes espectaculares de aquel ciclo 2001-2003 y donde el entrenador Clive Woodward contó  como capitán al segunda línea Martin Johnson y al apertura Jonny Wilkinson como goleador.

Es que el equipo de Inglaterra al comienzo de los años 2000 era el mejor de Europa por lejos. En los primeros cuatro partidos del primer Seis Naciones, el del 2000, Inglaterra arrasó: le endosó 44 puntos a  Gales en Cardiff y rompió los pronósticos afuera frente a Italia, y Escocia y a Francia en Twickenham, con marcador global de miedo: 171-45. Luego en 2002 y 2003 se proclamó campeón con Grand Slam incluído (es decir invicto).

 El equipo de Woodward, disfrutaba con juego a todo campo con la dirección técnica del entrenador de ataque Brian Ashton. “Fue un momento mágico para el equipo", un período "de oro de 15-hombres, que practicaban un  juego abierto que levantó  al público de sus asientos y fue un tributo espontáneo a las interpretaciones que son a la vez una espectacular clínica de rugby", expresó Clive Woodward en su libro “Winning”.

Regresando al presente el entrenador Stuart Lancaster llamó a la reflexión el pasado domingo en Dublín:  "La gente habla de lo que constituye un paso decisivo al Grand Slam y puedo asegurar que no hemos estado pensando de eso. Somos un grupo bastante tierra-tierra y sabemos que no damos un paso más largo de nuestro tranco por lo que apuntamos al siguiente desafío ante Francia en casa. Es decir apuntamos a eso y nada más”.

Lancaster es demasiado cauteloso y hábil para no darse cuenta de que el nivel de excitación pública en torno a la selección es mayor ahora que incluso cuando Inglaterra llegó a la final del mundial en Francia 2007 y después de una exitosa defensa del título, la perdió en 80 minutos de catástrofe con la humillante derrota por 36-0 ante los Springboks.

Pero, éste nivel de frenesí que está viviendo Inglaterra que corta el viento con 4 puntos por 2 de sus seguidores Irlanda, Gales, Escocia e Italia, y cero de Francia, relanza imágenes de diez años atrás, con aquella tercera línea formada por Richard Hill, Neil Back y Lawrence Dallaglio, de pareja de medios con Matt Dawson-Jonny Wilkinson, de  torres como Martin Johnson y Phil Vickery, y del centro Will Greenwood junto al wing Jason Robinson.

Es que la ilusión crece ya que parece que Lancaster encontró su Vickery en Dan Cole, principal pilar derecho en el mundo del juego, y si Ben Youngs crece como medio scrum, será perfecto para la vigencia de él y del apertura Owen Farrell-  Pero hay camino por transitar y decisiones por tomar en el resto de las fases del juego. El Woodward de los años 2000 se enfrenta a ésta etapa que Lancaster está viviendo en 2013.

Quiere las circunstancias de que como ocurrió en 2001 con los leones británicos e irlandeses  en gira por Australia, se repita en 2013 con otra gira del verano europeo otra vez en Australia. Aquella aventura por Oceanía involucró 20 jugadores de Inglaterra, si bien parece que ahora no serán tantos los ingleses del plantel capitaneado por el flanker Chris Robshaw, a ser convocados.

En 2002, Woodward fue capaz de otorgar a muchos de sus jugadores el lujo de un verano libre y sólo unos pocos fprimeras líneas participaron de la gira de dos partidos por Argentina. Pero Lancaster parece que no se puede tomar libertades ya que Inglaterra está programando una serie de tres tests en Nueva Zelanda, un lugar para viajar sin improvisaciones.
