A 12 días del comienzo del Rugby Championship 2013, los Pumas 10° en el ranking IRB,  se encuentran remontando una cuesta empinada en su preparación y buscando de alcanzar la performance más aproximativa para enfrentar un duro debut  entre los “top teams” del mundo, si se tiene en cuenta con Nueva Zelanda es 1°, Sudáfrica 2° y Australia 3°.
 

Argentina con  penal en tiempo cumplido del apertura tucumano Nicolás Sánchez  ganó el sábado pasado al combinado australiano  NSW Barbarians por 29-27 (10-12)  en el primero de dos partidos de preparación, jugado en La Plata Rugby Club de Martín Gonnet, en la provincia de Buenos Aires. La revancha el viernes en el “Padre Martearena” de la Ciudad de Salta.

La selección nacional  enfrentó a un combinado de jugadores australianos provenientes del seleccionado provincial de Nueva Gales del Sur, noveno en el Súper 15, y con debutantes que aspiran a las cinco plazas profesionales disponibles en el plantel superior que es la tercera franquicia de Australia que tiene cinco.

En la fría noche platense y ante 4000 espectadores, los Pumas intentando ser un “top team” anotaron tres tries con el dúo bonaerense formado por el wing Horacio Agulla y el hoocker Agustín Creevy (hizo doblete), más el pie del apertura bonaerense Juan Martín Hernández  (2 penales y 1 conversión) y del apertura tucumano Nicolás Sánchez (2 penales).

Pero lo peor: los Pumas encajaron cuatro ensayos: un doblete del pilar Sekope Kepu, más  tries del wing Peter Betham y del full back Drew Mitchell. Con cambios en el complemento,  embistieron  en el último cuarto de hora  y con más entusiasmo que destreza individual como tomas de decisiones, descontó atrapando la mínima diferencia.

Los Pumas estuvieron abajo en el marcador casi todo el amistoso, debido a escaso tackling en el centro de la cancha, confusión en los lines y los scrums donde fueron superados, y solo la precisa patada de Sánchez, en la última jugada, le terminó dando el partido aunque saben que quedó la mochila de quince minutos del segundo tiempo para el olvido.

Los dirigidos por Santiago Phelan y Graham Henry, deben mejorar mucho para lo que viene:  el choque nocturno de Salta ante NSW Barbarians, y el debut en 4 Naciones en Soweto,  el sábado 17 de agosto, ante Springboks  reforzados con Bulls de Pretoria, terceros del Súper 15  trás el campeón neocelandés Waikato Chiefs y del subcampeón australiano Brumbies de Canberra.
