El apertura y full back cordobés Santiago Carreras, ha tenido un excelente año 2025, siendo el máximo goleador del 14º Rugby Championship 2025,  y nombrado mejor jugador argentino del año.

Hoy, en el domingo del Adviento, Santi Carreras demostró una vez más, ser considerado máximo jugador de clase mundial, conduciendo al Bath a golear al Newcastle 50-14 y a ser líder absoluto.

El Bath suma 31 puntos por 28 del dúo Exeter Chiefs y Northampton Saints, tras la séptima ronda de la Premiership inglesa, en vísperas de La Nochebuena, bajo la lluvia y el duro invierno británico.

Pero no hay pausas, en la Premiership ya que tras la Navidad, el líder Bath recibe a uno de sus escoltas, el  Northampton Saints el sábado 27 de diciembre en duro clásico inglés.

El afirmado apertura de Los Pumas desde hace tres años demostró un rendimiento excepcional tanto a nivel de clubes (Córdoba Athletic Club, Gloucester y Bath en Premiership inglesa) como internacional.

The Córdoba’s fly-half and fullback, Santiago Carreras, has had an outstanding 2025, finishing as the top scorer in the 14th Rugby Championship and being named Argentina's Player of the Year.

Today, on Advent Sunday, Santi Carreras once again proved why he is considered a world-class player, leading Bath to a resounding 50-14 victory over Newcastle and securing their position as undisputed leader.

Bath has 31 points, ahead of Exeter Chiefs and Northampton Saints, who have 28 each, after the seventh round of English Premiership, on Christmas Eve, amidst the rain and the harsh British winter.

But there are no breaks in the Premiership, as after Christmas, league leaders Bath host one of their closest rivals, Northampton Saints, on Saturday, December 27, in a tough English derby.

Highlights of 2025

The established Pumas fly-half, who has been a regular for Los Pumas for three years, demonstrated exceptional performance at both club level (Córdoba Athletic Club, and Gloucester, and Bath in the English Premiership) and international level.

He was top scorer of the 14th Rugby Championship, netting 72 points in the Southern Hemisphere's premier tournament, surpassing other elite kickers.

Best Argentinian Player of the Year: He received 38.9% of the public vote, earning the recognition of the best rugby player in Argentina for the 2025 season.

Premiership Team of the Season: He was named to the Premiership's Team of the Season for the 2024-2025 season, recognized as the league's best fullback and fly-half.

International Recognition:

Specialized media outlets such as RugbyPass included him and eight other Pumas in their list of the Top 100 players in the world.

He will make his debut on January 3, 2026, against his former British team, the Glasgow Warriors. Kike Pieretto Heiland is under contract with the Zebre (where other Argentinians players also play) until 2027. He earned 23 caps for the Pumas.

With the women's and men's national teams, and the matches in the 35th Seven of the Republic, where the Dogos 7s were champions (with Fernando Luna (Córdoba Athletic Club), Augusto Guillamondegui (Córdoba Athletic Club), Juan Escobar (Córdoba Athletic Club), Joaquín Sánchez (Córdoba Athletic Club), Pedro Cáceres (Córdoba Athletic Club), Ignacio Rizzi (Córdoba Athletic Club), Santiago Tobal (Club La Tablada), Juan Altamira (Club La Tablada), Martín Bogado (Jockey Club Córdoba), Agustín Segura (Jockey Club Córdoba), Franco Cuaranta (Tala Rugby Club), and Nicolás Cantarutti (Tala Rugby Club)).

El ball carrier y tryman cordobés del Club La Tablada, Luciano González Rizzoni, fue elegido por la World Rugby (la federación internacional del rugby unión), como el ‘’Mejor Jugador del Año de Rugby 7s’’ (Rugby Seven) en 2025. 

El jugador cordobés de Villa General Belgrano, en la Provincia de Córdoba Luciano González Rizzoni fue reconocido por World Rugby como el Mejor Jugador del Año de Rugby 7s (Masculino) en 2025.

Luciano González Rizzoni que es un referente de los Los Pumas 7s y que juega para el Club La Tablada de Córdoba (donde también jugó La Leyenda Gastón Revol hasta 2025), fue distinguido por sobresaliente rendimiento durante la temporada 2024-2025.

Se convirtió en el tercer argentino en recibir esta distinción, después de que lo hicieran anteriormente los porteños Santiago Gómez Cora (actual entrenador de Los Pumas 7s junto al tucumano Leonardo Gravano) y Marcos Moneta.

Su desempeño fue clave para que Los Pumas 7s obtuvieran el primer lugar en la fase regular de las Series Mundiales de esa temporada, donde también militaban las leyendas cordobesas Gastón Revol, Germán Schulz y Lautaro Bazán Vélez, con quienes González Rizzoni, compartió la medalla de bronce en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio disputado en el estadio  Ajinomoto, en Tobytakyu, Chofu, suburbio suroeste de Tokio en julio de 2020.

Luciano González Rizzoni, the ball carrier and try scorer from Córdoba, Argentina, who plays for Club La Tablada, was chosen by World Rugby (International Federation of rugby union) as the "Rugby Sevens Player of the Year" for 2025.

The player from Villa General Belgrano, Córdoba Province, Luciano González Rizzoni, was recognized by World Rugby as the Best Rugby Sevens Player of the Year (Men's) for 2025.

Luciano González Rizzoni, a key player for Los Pumas 7s and who plays for Club La Tablada in Córdoba (where the legendary Gastón Revol also played until 2025), was distinguished for his outstanding performance during the 2024-2025 season.

He became the third Argentinian to receive this distinction, following Buenos Aires’s Santiago Gómez Cora (current coach of Los Pumas 7s alongside Tucuman’s Leonardo Gravano) and Buenos Aires’s Marcos Moneta.

His performance was key to Los Pumas 7s securing first place in the regular season of that year's World Series, where Córdoba’s legends Gastón Revol, Germán Schulz, and Lautaro Bazán Vélez also played.

Juan Cruz Mallía ya había ganado este premio en el año 2024. Carreras y Mallía se destacaron en las estadísticas del 14º Rugby Championship 2025.

Santiago Carreras fue el máximo goleador del 14º Rugby Championship 2025, con 72 puntos. Fue un jugador clave, con su ingreso en la conducción de Los Pumas a remontar partidos.

También Santi Carreras fue figura en el Gloucester de la Premiership inglesa donde jugó junto al segunda línea cordobés Matías Alemanno, para debutar en la Premiership 2025-2026, con el campeón Bath Rugby.

Santi Carreras aseguró el 6º lugar de Los Pumas como cabeza de serie para el XI Mundial de Australia 2027.

Juanchi Mallía, por su parte, demostró versatilidad jugando como wing y fullback, con gran desempeño tanto en los Pumas, como en el Toulouse del Top14 francés, donde fue campeón nacional y europeo.

Ambos jugadores fueron considerados figuras claves en la evolución y proyección de Los Pumas a lo largo de la temporada 2025.

Pero Juan Cruz Mallía sufrió una lesión postraumática del ligamento cruzado anterior en su rodilla derecha, tras un golpe recibido por el flanker inglés Tom Curry en el partido Inglaterra-Los Pumas en Twickenham.

Esta lesión, lo dejará fuera por el resto de temporada 2025/26. Se espera una recuperación de varios meses, aunque el tiempo exacto no ha sido detallado oficialmente por Unión Argentina de Rugby (UAR).

La lesión postraumática del ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA) en rodilla derecha es lesión grave, y las fuentes indican que no hubo rotura completa del ligamento, sino un desgarro o esguince severo.

 Lo que influye en el tipo de tratamiento o el tiempo de recuperación tras ser intervenido quirúrgicamente y se requiere un período de recuperación de cuatro a nueve meses,  para volver a competencia de alto nivel.

Juanchi Mallía realizará la mayor parte de su rehabilitación en Toulouse, suroeste de Francia, con su club, que lamenta su ausencia por su influencia y versatilidad que ejerce en el campo de juego. 

Santiago Carreras and Juan Cruz Mallía were standout players for Los Pumas in 2025.

Fly half Santiago Carreras (formerly of Córdoba Athletic Club and currently with Bath Rugby in the English Premiership) and fullback Juan Cruz Mallía (formerly of Jockey Club Córdoba and currently with Stade Toulousain in French Top 14) were key figures in world rugby with Los Pumas during the 2025 season.

Their performances, nominations for prestigious awards, and leading statistics for the Pumas, coached by Buenos Aires’s Felipe Contepomi, reflected their contributions.

Both players from Córdoba City, were nominated for the 2025 Olimpia de Plata Award in the rugby category, along with Buenos Aires’s  hooker Julián Montoya, the captain of Los Pumas.

 

Juan Cruz Mallía had already won this award in 2024. Carreras and Mallía stood out in the statistics of the 2025 Rugby Championship.

Santiago Carreras was the top scorer of the 2025 Rugby Championship, with 72 points. He was a key player, coming off the bench to lead Los Pumas to come from behind in matches.

Santi Carreras was also a key figure for Gloucester in the English Premiership, where he played alongside Córdoba’s lock Matías Alemanno, before making his Premiership debut in 2025-2026 with champions, Bath Rugby.

Santi Carreras secured Los Pumas' 6th seed for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Juanchi Mallía, for his part, demonstrated versatility playing as a wing and fullback, with outstanding performances both for Los Pumas and for Toulouse in the French Top 14, where he won both the national and European championships.

Both players were considered key figures in the evolution and projection of Los Pumas throughout the 2025 season.

But Juan Cruz Mallía suffered a post-traumatic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee after a collision with England flanker Tom Curry during the England-Pumas match at Twickenham.

This injury will sideline him for the remainder of the 2025/26 season. A recovery period of several months is expected, although the exact timeframe has not been officially specified by the Argentinian Rugby Union (UAR).

A post-traumatic ACL injury in the right knee is a serious injury, and sources indicate that there was no complete rupture of the ligament, but rather a severe tear or sprain.

This influences the type of treatment and recovery time following surgery, requiring a rehabilitation period of four to nine months before he can return to high-level competition.

Juanchi Mallía will carry out most of his rehabilitation in Toulouse, in southwestern France, with his club, which regrets his absence due to his influence and versatility on the pitch.

Cette blessure l'éloignera des terrains pour le reste de la saison 2025/26. Une période de convalescence de plusieurs mois est prévue, bien que la durée exacte n'ait pas été officiellement précisée par la Fédération argentine de rugby (UAR).
